English 10: Writing Portfolio
Catholic Memorial High School
Dear Ms. Rowling,
My name is Erick Cassidy; I’m a 15 year old high school sophomore at Catholic Memorial High School
in West Roxbury, MA. and I live in Weymouth, Massachusetts, U.S.A which is a suburb of Boston.
My English teacher asked us to choose a favorite author and to write to them asking you to come to
our school and speak. I immediately thought of you and how much I’ve enjoyed your literature since
I was 9 yrs. old. My Mom brought home the book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” one day and
I’ve been hooked ever since. Not once could I put the book down. I remember waiting for my Mom on
several read. I enjoy how you’ve written the story because it all fits together and it seems like a
movie in my head. That idea of picturing the story in my head really seemed to occur often when I
was reading your sixth book: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. “Greatness inspires envy, envy
engenders spite, spite spawns lies”, is a quote that I like because it explains how people who excel
at something too much, eventually will want more greatness. And, how the envy of greatness leads to
spite which can lead to lying which summarizes how greed can take over the human mind.
I admire in all of your books the sense of mystery and suspense that circles around in your mind
when I read one of your books. What really fascinates me about your life is that you rose from
nothing and writing on napkins about your series to being richer that the Queen of England. When I
learned that was how you started to write your books and rose to fame, I realized how good of a
writer you must be. I always eagerly await the release of your next book and always get
enthusiastic about how you reveal secrets that have been hidden in previous books.
I would really like to ask you to consider visiting my school in Boston. I think everyone here
would love to hear about your life and how you came to be such a great author. I heard in July of
2007, the release of your 7th book is going to happen. Would you please consider coming to a book
signing in Boston, Massachusetts or dropping by my school to talk about it?
