If you don’t come to our class we will not be able to learn about your works. We will not have any time to take out of our class time unless you personally make an appearance to our school. Also it would be better for you to come and teach us your works because you know them the best.

In my research I have come to see that you write in many different ways such as a novelist, play writer , and short stories. Also u have won some awards such as in 2003 you won the Northern Rock Foundation Writers award. You have made many accomplishment and my class and I would really like to learn about how it feels to write and win these awards. As I was reading through some of your work I have come to find that the “Taxi Drivers Daughter” sounds like a very interesting book just by the first line were it says “Mac drives like a man in a pot of treacle”.. This line really got to me by the words that you use to explain how the guy drives right in the first line of the book. See how you use these words in this book makes me want to really learn more about your works.

The British in the 1900's and earlier used to use their songs that were written to have specific meaning in what they did. For example they had songs for their country, what the did daily in their life, and other songs such as their habit of drinking in those periods. One song that represents their habit of drinking. The title of this song is “Anacreontic Song”, and it was written by Ralph Tomilson in1782. This song does have great significance to a famous song that is now the “ Star Spangled Banner.” The two songs both use the same tune too go along with , that was created by John Stafford Smith. This song is very important to the culture of the British. It Shows how they liked to go out and have drinks and write songs about what the liked to do in thier lives. This song also shows how the man related their daily duties to the gods.

According to Poem of The Week, this song is a very cultural song. It is A British drinking song that was sung at the Crown and Anchor Tavern, in Strand. It was named after the Greek poet Anacreon wh was known for his poems about love and wine. This song was sung by all in the tavern as they were drinking. Also, according to the BLCP their was a society called the Anacreontic Society which was a popular gentlemen’s club in London. The president of this society was Mr. Ralph Tomilson who has written this song.

The word from this song explains how the many men who used to go to the gentlemen’s club and drink. “ while thus we agree, Our toast let it be,” is one example o f how it influenced the people in the club. Another way that it was cultural song was the way that it was influenced by the gods. This song is mainly about the gods. For example, “ Apollo rose up” and “ the yellow haired god,” are two quotes that shows how the song was about the gods.

Today the songs tune has influenced us today. A famous song that is sung by all americans written in 1814, By Francis Scott Key, the “Star Spangled Banner” the same tune uses the same tune as the Anacreontic Song. This is the recent usage of this song today other that one of Key’s other poems about a naval victory in 1804, according to the Smithsonian, other than these poems and songs there is no other evidence shown that their ias any way today that this song is used.

In the month of February 2006, a man from France was caught on the Ivory Coast. He is accused for a brutal death of a 23 year old Jewish man. This man is Youssef Fofana, a French Citizen, involved in a gang. This is an on going investigation that has just started in France which will proceed for a couple of months. The motive of the man behind the murders is believed to be greed and power that the man he killed had. The stating that it was over anti Semitic believing the man had money and he wanted it.

Based on the criminals motive it is said that he did this for greed, but in all cases he did this for another. In the interview with Frances i-tele Television Fofana said, “The kidnapping was for financial reasons.” He says that he was not trying to do this in any sort of racism act but in anticipation of money. Although it is believed that he did not do this for any other reason, it is likely that money was not just the case in this brutal murder of an innocent Jewish man.

In this case there also some other people that are believed to be part of this awful murder. It is know that Fofana is part of a gang and it is believed that they are helped in killing this man. Now in France they have 16 people indicted for this case, and there was also one person arrested in the neighboring country of Belgium. France is not taking this matter lightly because of it being against a Jewish man. They say that the way that this man was tortured it was made out to be a racist crime. But it is all said that he did this for the money and it is most positive he did not like the power this man had over him because he was believed to have money.

In story written by Charles Dickens call the “The Trial of Murder,” relates to the crime committed in France, February 2006.This is relevant to the story because it talks about how the murder is first played off. It also shows that at first that they could not find the right away. Again it relates to the crime by that in the trial all eyes were on the murder not on anything else. These to cases have very much in common. It is not know to this day if he is convicted of the crime committed. But in the end there will be a price to pay and their will be someone that pays it.

Today in the world there are many words that are spoken during a days period. Many of these words are in different languages. But, in many cases English is the most commonly spoken language that was created years and years ago by a combination of other languages. One famous word is check first written back in the 1300’s and has a variety of meanings to its name. Everyday this word is being used weather it is in the rink or at the bank this word is commonly used. Today I believe that the word check is a very useful word in the English language. This word is helpful to the language and is not harmful to it, but in many ways a good word to use in many cases.

Today there are many different dictionaries. Each one of these with different meanings for each of the words. For instance in the American Heritage Dictionary the common definition it uses is “An action or influence that stops motion or expression; a restraint.” Another famous dictionary is Merriam-Webster’s, “ a written order signed by its maker directing a bank to pay a specified sum to a named person or to that person's order on demand. The last source of dictionaries that use the word in a different way is Word Net, “a written order directing a bank to pay money.” these are the ways that are used in the common dictionaries that everyone uses in everyday use..

The OED has many different meanings for the word check. For instance a very peculiar way to use it is check-rook, which is a dead definition of the word meaning “ the call of checking when at the same time on the rooks are threatened with capture.” Another interesting definition coming from the OED is “ to mark with a chess board pattern of crossing lines.” In the OED it tells as many meanings as possible to find and another way check was used that is a dead meaning today is, “ a stoppage of wages or a fine for nonfuliment duties or transgression of rules, inflicted apon the servants of the royal household.” These are the interesting meanings that the OED gives to you.

Three famous writers over time have used the word check. The first to use it was Chaucer, in which he wrote in the book of The Duchesse, “ there with fortune said checke here, and mate in the midpoint of the checkere.” the second famous writer to use the word was Dryden and he wrote, “ when sone falcon the quarry missed, straight fly’s at check, and clips it down the wind.” The last famous author that used the word check was Southey in his book Pilgrim Compostella, “ in from the yard they came without check.” these authors use this word in unique ways not known for this word.

In our language today the word check is used often to mean various things that are very common to all people. For instance I asked a friend of mine named George Gould what he thought when he heard the word check and he said, “when you say this word I think of a check that you have to write to some one when you owe them money or when you get paid.” Then I asked my father, John Edmonston, to see what he thought of, and he said, “ Do you mean like a check in hockey?” He thinks of it as a big hit that is thrown in the game of hockey when players collide with each other. Then I asked my mother, Trisha Edmonston, what came to mind when she heard the word check, and she said, “ I am not a big chess player but checkmate comes to mind right now.” It is clear to see that there are many different ways to use this word and not everyone thinks of the same meaning. Knowing this there is a 2:1 chance that they are going to come up with a different definition for the word depending on their atmosphere.

“Check” is a major part of our language today so I took the time out to ask a couple of people that I knew that spoke different languages if they recognize this word in their language. After asking JoAnna Edmonston who is fluent in Spanish if she remembers anything about the word check and she replied, “ I do remember learning that word a long time ago. It is not a major word in that language so I do not actually remember what it was.” I then asked my Latin teacher Mrs. Hynes if she remembers learning the word and she said, “yes, I do and it is a very simple word in Latin.. It is not used a majority of the time but it is their.” The last person that I took an interview with was Mr. Tracey who is the French teacher. He said, “ I do know this word and I use it all the time in class when I speak to the kids telling them to check on something. It was a very easy word to learn and I am sure it is a commonly used word in French.” After talking to these people I have the sense that this word is known to most languages and is very common. It is believed that the majority of these people know this word no matter which language they speak.

After doing my research on this word I have come to the conclusion that no matter where you are this word can be used. Since it has been used by many famous writers such a “Chaucer” all the way down to some random people that I have interviewed you get a good taste of this word across the charts. It is amazing that one such word can mean a whole many different things and people don’t get confused with it. Today many words are spoken through out the day and you begin to see that there are two many words for you to even remember all of them, but this one word check is known to almost all the people across the nation by one meaning or another.
