Dear Jimmy Page

Hello, my name is Peter Falanga. I live in Franklin Massachusetts and I am very fond of your work. I go to school at Catholic Memorial in West Roxbury Ma. I am a huge fan of you works and writings you did with Robert PLANT, John Bonham, and john Paul Jones. I enjoy all of your songs, which have inspired me to take up the instruments guitar, drums, and piano. You could say that you are an inspiration to me.

When I first listened to a Led Zeppelin song a long time ago, I became hooked on your music which allowed me to look more deeply into rock and roll. You inspired me to research music including its influences, phases, bands, and understand the true meaning of rock. I have read many of the Led Zeppelin books such as Hammer on the gods which took me even deeper into the rock and roll spirit learning more about its past, importance and all of the most effective people such as your self, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry etc. in music.

Listening to your songs and their stories behind them has truly inspired my songwriting creating more symbolic meaning in them and having a derivative rhythm giving more meaning and purpose to a song. Having a sense of originality where people put more time, care and effort and purpose to a song not just to entertain but to tell someone a story. My personal favorite song of yours is Achilles last stand. I love the line: As I turned to you, you smiled at me How could you say no? All the fun we had To live the dreams we always had All the songs we sing My favorite album is: Led Zeppelin” because the style of creativity in the songs were fantastic and gave great emphasize on rock and jazz rhythms and styles in the songs.

I believe the period of rock and roll was the standing point in music history because it had the most impact on culture and entertainment by touching peoples lives with what they thought of in life. Each song and band had a sense of originality. Your guitar playing has influenced dozens of guitarists after you and your creations on the guitar and the way you performed changed music forever such as the powerful section you put on “dazed and Confused” live with a bow of a violin which just puts me in awe every time I listen to is and see it on screen.

I wish rock and roll was still alive today but luckily there are people like you who influenced many after you giving rock a more lasting life. Thanks to you I have a better way of living life by listening to rock and in particular your works of art in your Led Zeppelin titles and influencing me to someday become a music teacher teaching children about the true essence of music including rock.

I would like to ask you if you could come to Catholic Memorial and play music for us or share some stories of your past.

Sincerely yours, Peter Falanga

A hundred years ago A hundred years ago was written by Stan hugill. It was written for sailors in the late 1700’s when people did a lot of trading through seas. Around Liverpool England it was somewhat famous that mainly seamen would sing on the harbor. It would be song on boats and on shores. The song spread to Massachusetts its’ harbors but no were else. Now the song is never heard on the radio not one person would remember it or even hum, unless they were a sailor in the mid 1700’s. This song has some cultural influence, it teaches us values, and it contains history.

Stan Hugill wrote this song because of his passion for the ocean. Growing up in and around harbors and boats gave Hugill a sailors life. During the time of Hugill’s life the ocean was a big part of daily life because people traveled through boats to get to other countries, and sailors would trade goods to other ports around the world. Hugill wrote this song to give thanks to the sailors. The song describes how sailors made the world a better place within 100 years. The song also conveys a message to listeners about life.

The song teaches us how far people could come in 100 years. Although the song is was meant to be for enjoyment it also has a serious side. It taught people how ideas in life change through the years. Such as how people used to think that the “moon was made out of cheese” and that “pigs could fly”. The song conveys a message to sailors how that they made this world great and that they keep the world turning. The song didn’t effect anything but culture how it made people think of all of there accomplishments and to give people joy through that good feeling of accomplishment. Stan Hugill wrote the song primarily for sailors so they could sing songs on long voyages therefore the song’s popularity waned.

The song was popular along the coasts of England. It was usually hummed because of its’ derivative beat and notes, but some people would also sing it. The song contains rhymes and repletion with the phrase “Oh, one hundred years ago”. The song was played with a fiddler and a singer. Nowadays the song could not be remembered. The song had many references to the sea such as trading and the overall excitement of sailing. The main reason why it was a small song that became big around harbors was because it was extremely catchy and was hard to get out of your head.

There are many possible reasons why Hugill wrote this song. They could be His love for the sea, gratuity towards sailors, or his passion for giving enjoyment to others with a catchy tune or giving the feeling of accomplishment. This song has never been “covered” or redone because of its short life and connectivity between life at sea and sailors. “A hundred years ago” by Stan Hugill was a captivating tune that gave people lots of gratification.

Charles Cullen a man of mystery, age 43, is being held in question for the possible murders in New Jersey and Pennsylvania hospitals. The big twist here is that he turned himself in. He claims to have killed about 40 to 50 people. Working as a male nurse having the task to determine if the patients he works with will live or die. Not until recently have we known that the people that seemed to be dying of sick diseases were not sick and still had a long life to live. He wanted to prove that he has power over the will to be caught and to have the power to determine the fate of many people and getting away all this time.

Charles Cullen did not have to turn himself in, so why did he? perhaps an act of empowerment for him. Charles perhaps was insulting those of his coworkers saying “see what I got away with all this time”. The first time Cullen confessed was in December 2003. He says he had killed one person a month for the past sixteen years at numerous hospitals. Even now he is confessing on more and more modern murders he has proclaimed. Cullen at times will tell the names of his victims. Charles Cullen exclaims turning himself in was necessary because it in a way would mock everyone for not catching him after all this time.

Cullen has affected the families in many ways. The families felt grief, pain, and sorrow after the hearing. They said they would never be left at a hospital again over night. No other person may have benefited from these crimes or have been involved in the crime. Unless Cullen is only covering for someone or has someone else working for him he was the only murderer. At the trial the family asked why he had performed this awful act he did not answer. The families agree to dub him “angel of death”.

When the time came to finally review all of Cullen’s killings he became the top killer in New England. He seemed to have been happy and emotion as if he had accomplished something when he was given that title. Cullen had no chance of being innocent after his total of killings including a judge and many other groups of people of different occupations.

This crime is motivated by power in a few ways. Cullen believed by killing others he gained power to cheat life and the ability to get caught as well and to also to have the power to determine the fate of others. He remarks also just the fact of getting away with it all this time he can manipulate the government. Cullen believed turning himself in would be the only way to really put it in his coworkers’ face as well as the governments face saying,” look what I can as well as get away with it”.

In British literature there are no stories that contain the same general crime that Cullen pulled off because it was extremely wicked and preposterous. Although in a few stories it sheds some relativity that Cullen has, which innocent people are dying, because of the ideas of others. In the story Macbeth, lady Macduff and her children are murdered by crazy and psychopathic Macbeth, even the kings having done nothing wrong even though not being perfect were killed innocently because of Macbeth having crazy ideas about life and wanting more power. Cullen’s wanting of power resulted in many deaths of innocent people.

Language can be considered many things. To me it is the true essence that makes the world different. It can separate regions of humans, it helps you distinguish cultures. It can be hurtful and be weapons of mass destruction; language is our means of communicating which is the only way to establish a large and beautiful world. Language can be a burning fire run by hatred or a world of beauty and color. I believe it is the key to the doorway of possibilities, truth, imagination, war, love, and civilization. Language is the passage to a never ending sanctuary that can live forever.

Having such a large language as English we can include many good points but as well as hurtful points. One particular word in the English language is “gargantuan”. I think the word “gargantuan” can hurt the world because it is unnecessary. This word has many synonyms such as enormous, very large, and big, etc. a language should never be too big it just repeats itself. We will soon need two dictionaries containing only other ways to say a certain way such as big to enormous. It is only used to sub in for another word such as big.

The pronunciation of the word stays the same through people who speak English in America. With garg, as in gargle, then anch-ual. Other languages such as French do not have a word for “gargantuan” in their language but have the word grand, which means big. The Miriam-Webster dictionary says that “gargantuan” means of tremendous size. As in that man is “gargantuan”. American-heritage described a “gargantuan” being of immense size. For example, that mountain is gargantuan. The bartleby.com dictionary says “gargantuan” means of immense size as well. The Cambridge dictionary describes gargantuan as very large. As in, that TV is gargantuan.

The oxford English dictionary contains many sources and definitions of the word “gargantuan”. It describes “gargantuan” as being enormous and monstrous. This word was first written in 1593. It was originally written in Middle English. Surprisingly this was the only definition it had at its’ time and it is still the only definition. This word had many appearances in literature during its lifetime. Its first appearance in literature was back in good old 1593. The book was named “Pierce’s Supercrog”, written by a man names Harvey. On page 224 it is written as, “Pore I, that am matched with such a gargantuist.” In this sentence the word is used as a noun as if the character the man is comparing himself to be very powerful and large. This word also appeared in 1596s “Haue with you” written by Nashe. In the book it is seen on page 49, “The gargantuan bag-pudding.” It is used as an adjective describing the bag-pudding, as if the bag-pudding is enormous.

The word “gargantuan” is even used in newspapers and articles as well as books. In the San Jose mercury news it uses the word in its article, “Nintendo made a gargantuan gamble”. The word gargantuan in this sentence is used as an adjective and describes Nintendo making an enormous gamble. USA today used the word as well in an article. In an article’s headline, such as in the Chicago tribune “a gargantuan sparks a debate”. “Gargantuan” in that sentence was used as a noun in which something very big perhaps powerful made a debate. “Gargantuan” is also the name of a book and movie. In which the central character in the story is a mighty and powerful creature. Therefore, gargantuan is again used as something very large. This word is used in the movie king Kong in which the character Jack Driscoll calls Kong a “gargantuan.” As you can see, the word “gargantuan” is used the same in all cases although it can be used in different parts of speech from adjective and a noun.

I surveyed 10 people on what they believed the word “gargantuan” meant and how it is used in a sentence that they have created. They all used “gargantuan” as a noun except my two younger brothers using it as an adjective. For example, John Falanga said massive as soon as he heard the word “gargantuan”. He said “Dinosaurs are gargantuan”. I interviewed several non-native speakers about the word “gargantuan” and the English language. Louise Rubaud a French speaker said she had never heard of that word, she pronounced it with a softer “t”. Mina Rubaud an Arabic native had some trouble learning the word and said the English language is very difficult to learn as far as pronunciation goes with words. She pronounced the word “gargan-shoun”.

The English language has become more widely known all around the world. Because in schools such as in Europe are learning it in schools. America does not teach other languages as much as they should be. Everyone should be fluent in two languages. Learning other languages can help you see what the world is like. The English language is dominating a good portion of the world. Language is as always something that should be treasured, cared for and used properly. Such as the speeches of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg address. Language could be used to heal or help the world such as martin Luther king Jr.’s words of wisdom he addressed to America that helped create a more unified world and ended segregation. “Gargantuan” is a word that can hurt the world by using it’s incredibility to influence people not to disrupt there thoughts on how it is easier to describe something large by simply saying,”very large” or “enormous”.
